The stories are told in whispers, even after so long of a man whose fair rule soured when he attained eternal youth. Imprisoned by a sorceress wife in a city out of time and place, he has passed into legend. Few believe in him, and fewer would set their hopes on his mercy. But Imogen has no choice. To break the curse that's isolated her since birth, she'll find the Undying King--and answer his secrets with her own...

^^Author Note The Undying King is a stand-alone (not part of any series) novella of approximately 43,000 words and is also available in a duology titled FOR CROWN AND KINGDOM.

The Undying King edition by Grace Draven Isis Sousa Lora Gasway Paranormal Romance eBooks

I adore Grace Draven. Her beautiful writing style and powerful stories easily make her one of my favourite authors. I loved this story too - and would have given it five stars if it hadn't felt a little rushed toward the end.

The story is of Imogen, a young woman who has been cursed from birth, and Cededa, a cruel king who has been cursed with eternal life. After her stepmother dies, Imogen travels to Cededa's dead city in an attempt to lift the curse which makes a normal life impossible. Her touch is death but not to Cededa, the Undying King. Draven writes great anti-heroes. Cededa is a monster but an eternity alone to contemplate his actions has taught him many harsh lessons. Imogen is his only chance at redemption.

There was so much potential here for a full-length novel, so much depth that went unexploited. The first half was definitely my favourite, but at the three-quarter mark the action sped up and the novella finished abruptly. I would still recommend the story, as it has all the elements that make Grace Draven's works so memorable: vividly drawn and realistic characters, a credible and interesting fantasy world and an exciting plot. It just needed to be longer!

Repeated by some other critiques, the plot definitely felt rushed & lacking. The area Draven could of extended was Imogen's past. She also could of added more depth in Cededa's dead realm of Tineroth, like the history of the cursed Waters that gave him the immortality. Or she could of ended this story where they found a spell to lift the deadly touch of Imogen's by using the greedy sorcery, Dradus, while unlocking the spell of Cededa's as well. The ending just left you dissatisfied, good beginning, but weak ending. Draven's a skillful writer, but most of her books are short stories. YOU WANT MORE.
Really lovely, well-written fantasy romance revolving around a tortured hero-king, a strong (and also tortured) heroine, and their short journey together towards love and redemption. If I had to criticize, the ending felt a bit abrupt. An epilogue, a glimpse into the future, would have been nice since I was left with a few lingering questions. This could have been a full length novel. But overall, as with all of Grace Draven's stories, I fell in love with the no-nonsense characters who are complex but refreshingly honest with themselves and with each other. No common tropes like the Noble Idiocy Syndrome or Intense Internal Dialogues here. Just two people getting to know each other and falling in love against a gorgeously written backdrop of a long lost kingdom, magical curses, and some court intrigue. I've been a huge fan of Grace Draven since reading Radiance (Wraith Kings). This one doesn't disappoint!
3.5 stars

I liked so much about this short read (140 pages). The story, the characters, the world had the high quality I expect and love from Grace Draven but it felt a little rushed at the end and I felt the story could have been fuller.

Imogen and Ceceder were fantastic characters, unusual, strong-minded with slow building but fantastic chemistry. The romance and intimacy was superb and Grace Draven excels at writing these parts without one bit of awkwardness.

The bottom line is, I just wanted more story and story development from a certain point. Clearly, I still liked this story and I’m a staunch fan of the author. All her books are an automatic read for me. If you are a fan, it is definitely worth reading and it will hold you over until her next book release.
Imogen carries a curse. Whoever she touches skin to skin dies. Her foster mother gave her an enchanted key to the lost kingdom of Tineroth where the Undying King reins. Once called Cedada the Fair, then Cedada the Butcher, he is called no more as he has faded into myth and legend, and Tineroth exists between realms. The King seems to be immune to her life-leeching curse and says he may be able to help her. Meanwhile she is being hunted by a wicked mage who serves an unscrupulous Prince who would use Imogen to enrich himself. This is about an unlikely love between Death’s handmaiden and a King who would chose death over immortality if only his curse would allow.
This is a tale rich with luscious language and compelling characters. Descriptions of sensuality are tasteful and evocative. I, like other reviewers, wish this had been longer.
This story is short and sweetly crafted to a luscious finish. But it pales in comparison to the rich and entrancing worlds of Radiance and Master of Crows. Their stories are so completely entrenched within me that I'm having trouble letting good work just be good, after I have been beguiled by greatness.
Draven's intriguing premise lured me what might happen if a king with a nightmarish past, who was cursed with immortality and fated to live alone, imprisoned in a dead and now-decaying city four thousand years earlier meets a woman whose very touch brings death? The mystery behind why each of them is cursed is a very compelling hook.

So much of Draven's lyrical and mythical world building, as well as her characterization, remind me of fantasy master Patricia McKillip's, but the romance and love that grow between McKillip's characters is almost always understated and never culminates in such rich eroticism. In case sex scenes make you squeamish, never fear. The scenes are relatively brief, don't generally offer too much detail, and are never kinky (the way magic and sex in other modern fantasies often tends to be). Skimming over such scenes is recommended, if sex scenes give you the heebs they reinforce the growing bond between the lovers, but the important action comes in the revelatory dialogue and action outside the bedchamber.

Draven offers a richly rewarding read for all lovers of high fantasy with a focus on romance, and at this low price for an ebook, it shouldn't be missed. I look forward to reading more of her work.
